The Film Kitchen specializes in producing and co-producing feature films for the international market. It also produces short films and series for television for the (inter)national market. The production company cooperates closely with strong and experienced filmmakers as well as with young remarkable talents, nationally and internationally.
Our goal is to bring interesting, and for today’s society relevant, content that touches a wide audience, always matching the high cinematographic standards we keep. The Film Kitchen develops and produces provocative art house films as well as feature films for a mainstream audience.
The Film Kitchen started on January 1, 2016 with Ineke Kanters and Jan van der Zanden as producers. Before that time Van der Zanden was the CEO of Waterland Film, which was established in 1994. From January 1st 2016 onward The Film Kitchen is the owner of all finished film projects by Waterland Film and of all projects in development. Kanters worked at NOS public television in the Netherlands and as an executive producer at Kasander Film before. Before starting The Film Kitchen she worked together with Van der Zanden at Waterland Film as a producer.
Ineke Kanters studied history in Rotterdam. After her college years she worked as a producer for Studio Sport (Dutch public television) and as an Internet editor at the Netherlands Broadcasting Foundation in Hilversum. After this she worked as a fund manager at the Rotterdam Media Fund and as development executive producer at Kasander Film. Since January 2012 she had her own company and worked part time at Waterland Film where she was involved in the development, financing and production of feature films. In January 2016 she founded The Film Kitchen together with Jan van der Zanden.
Jan van der Zanden graduated in cultural psychology and worked as a psychologist at the University of Amsterdam. After the foundation of Waterland Film in 1994, he followed international film financing at the Media Business School. In 2003 he was selected 'Producer on the Move' at the Cannes Film Festival. In January 2016 he founded with Ineke Kanters The Film Kitchen.
Elleke Swaans did her graduation internship for Communication & Management at the University of Applied Sciences Utrecht at Waterland Film. After that she was employed by Waterland Film where she was responsible for communication, public relations and marketing of all films and television drama. She was also responsible for the concise and financial support of the projects. She works now at The Film Kitchen as project manager.
Luuk Hoekx graduated in Production at the Dutch Film Academy in Amsterdam. During his study he did an internship at De Familie Film en Televisie and others. After graduating in 2016 Luuk worked as an (assistant) production manager for the television series Doctor Deen and Klem before starting as junior producer at The Film Kitchen.
One of the companies’ feature films is Kauwboy by Boudewijn Koole. At the Berlinale 2012, Kauwboy won the Best First Feature Award and the Best Youth Film Award. The film was the Dutch entry for the Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film and won the EFA European Discovery Award and the EFA Young Audience Award. The most recent production, the youth film Fight Girl, directed by Johan Timmers, premiered at the Dutch Film Festival on September 30, 2018. A month later Fight Girl won two Cinekd Lions at the Amsterdam youth film festival Cinekid.
The feature film Love Revisited by director Nicole van Kilsdonk and written by Peer Wittenbols, a co-production with a Private View from Belgium, has been released in the Netherlands and Belgium on November 2, 2017, after the film had its premiere at the Parool Film Festival in Amsterdam. The international feature film Disappearance by Boudewijn Koole, a co-production with Norway, was released in the Netherlands March 2, 2017, sales agent is Pluto Film from Germany. The film was selected for the Toronto International Film Festival 2017. Handle with care (co-production with Norway and Denmark) by Arild Andresen was shot in Colombia and had its world premiere at Göteborg Film Festival in February 2017.
The Film Kitchen was one of the co-producers of White Sun the internationally acclaimed film by Nepalese director Deepak Rauniyar. The film was selected for Venice International Film Festival 2016 and Toronto International Film Festival 2016. In Venice White Sun won the Interfilm Award; in 2017 the film also won several awards and was selected as the Nepalese entry for Best Foreign Language Film for the Academy Awards 2018. Recently another coproduction, Cobain by director Nanouk Leopold, premiered at the Berlinale 2018 is produced by Circe Films (NL) with The Film kitchen, A Private View (Belgium) and Coin Film (Germany) as co-producers.
Bullhead by Michaël R. Roskam (nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film 2012) was the first international coproduction with Savage Film (BE). The Film Kitchen co-produced several Latin American films like Two gun shots by director and script writer Martín Rejtman, which premiered at the Locarno Film Festival 2014 and was in competition for the Golden Leopard, The third side of the river by Célina Murga, which was selected for the 2014 Berlinale, was a minority coproduction with Tresmilmundos Cine (Argentina), Peter Rommel (Germany) and executive producer Martin Scorsese, Milagros Mumenthaler’s Back to stay (2011) won a Golden Leopard for Best Film and Best Actress in Locarno 2011. It was a minority coproduction with Ruda Ciner (Argentina), Bordu Films (Switzerland, Fortuna Films (NL)and the Hubert Bals Fund Rotterdam.

In production is the feature length documentary How Sosruko stole fire from the giant by director Ineke Smits in co-production with Inti Film Belgium, The Test of Time, an animation film for television (AVROTROS) by directors Joost van den Bosch and Erik Verkerk of Ka Ching Cartoons and script writers Mark Veerkamp and Tingue Dongelmans, and Sunburned, a co-production with German producers Niko Film and Polish co-producer Staron Film, directed and written by Carolina Helsgård.
Feature projects that are in development include the international co-production Sleep. by Jan-Willem van Ewijk (co-production with Belgium and USA), Mr. K a feature film by Tallulah Schwab, Yandi and the Treasure of Mamata, a feature animation film by Joost van den Bosch and Erik Verkerk (Ka-Ching Cartoons), Injury, a feature film by writer/director Karin Junger, My Father is a Saucisse, a co-production with A Private View by director Anouk Fortunier to a script written by Jean-Claude van Rijckeghem, The Age of Magic, a co-production with Inti Film (Belgium) written by Ben Okri and Peter Krüger who will also be the director, Raja by director and script writer Deepak Rauniyar, in a co-production with Nepal, and La Practica, a new project by Argentinian script writer and director Martín Rejtman.
