Who we are

The Film Kitchen specializes in producing and coproducing feature films, documentaries, shorts and TV series for the international market. We cooperate closely with strong and experienced filmmakers as well as with young remarkable talents, both nationally and internationally. 

Our goal is to bring interesting, and for today’s society relevant, content that touches a wide audience, always matching the high cinematographic standards we keep. We develop and produce provocative arthouse films as well as feature films for a broader audience.

The Film Kitchen started on January 1, 2016 with Ineke Kanters and Jan van der Zanden as producers. Van der Zanden has been the CEO of Waterland Film, which was established in 1994. The Film Kitchen now is the owner of all finished film projects and projects in development by Waterland Film. Kanters has worked at NOS public television in the Netherlands and as an executive producer at Kasander Film. Before starting The Film Kitchen she worked together with Van der Zanden at Waterland Film as a producer.



Elleke Swaans

Project Manager

Elleke Swaans did her graduation internship for Communication & Management at the University of Applied Sciences Utrecht at Waterland Film. After that she was employed by Waterland Film where she was responsible for communication, public relations and marketing of all films and television drama. She was also responsible for the concise and financial support of the projects. She works now at The Film Kitchen as project manager.


Daya de Jongh

Assistant to theProducer

Daya de Jongh studied BA Language and Culture Studies at Utrecht University and MA Film and Photographic Studies at Leiden University. During and after her studies she worked at several film festivals, among which Go Short – International Short Film Festival Nijmegen, the Netherlands Film Festival and International Film Festival Rotterdam. During her masters, Daya did an internship at producer Circe Films and after graduation she was employed as assistant to the producer. Now she is assistant to the producer at The Film Kitchen.


Ineke Kanters

Producer / Managing Director

Ineke Kanters studied history in Rotterdam. After her college years she worked as a producer for Studio Sport (Dutch public television) and as an Internet editor at the Netherlands Broadcasting Foundation in Hilversum. After this she worked as a fund manager at the Rotterdam Media Fund and as development executive producer at Kasander Film. Since January 2012 she had her own company and worked part time at Waterland Film where she was involved in the development, financing and production of feature films. In January 2016 she founded The Film Kitchen together with Jan van der Zanden.


Jan van der Zanden

Producer / Managing Director

Jan van der Zanden graduated in cultural psychology and worked as a psychologist at the University of Amsterdam. After the foundation of Waterland Film in 1994, he followed international film financing at the Media Business School. In 2003 he was selected 'Producer on the Move' at the Cannes Film Festival. In January 2016 he founded with Ineke Kanters The Film Kitchen.

Curriculum Vitae

Our feature film Kauwboy (2012) by Boudewijn Koole won the Best First Feature Award and the Best Youth Film Award at the Berlinale. It was the Dutch entry for the Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film and won the EFA European Discovery Award and the EFA Young Audience Award. The feature Love Revisited (2017) by director Nicole van Kilsdonk has been released in the Netherlands and Belgium in 2017, after the premiere at the Parool Film Festival in Amsterdam. The feature Disappearance (2017) by Boudewijn Koole was selected for TIFF and released in the Netherlands in 2017.

The Film Kitchen has been the co-producer of several features, such as Milagros Mumenthaler’s Back to stay (2011), which won a Golden Leopard for Best Film and Best Actress in Locarno 2011; Bullhead (2011) by Michaël R. Roskam, nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film 2012; Two gun shots (2014) by director and scriptwriter Martín Rejtman, which premiered at the Locarno FF 2014 and was nominated for the Golden LeopardThe third side of the river (2014) by Célina Murga, which was selected for the 2014 Berlinale; the internationally acclaimed White Sun (2016) by Nepalese director Deepak Rauniyar, which was selected for Venice IFF and TIFF 2016 and won several awards, among which the Venice Interfilm Award and was selected as the Nepalese entry for Best Foreign Language Film for the Academy Awards 2018; and Handle with care (2017) by Arild Andresen, which had its world premiere at the Göteborg FF. The most recent co-production is Cobain (2018) by director Nanouk Leopold, which premiered at the Berlinale 2018 and is produced by Circe Films (NL), in co-production with A Private View (BE), COIN Film (DE) and VPRO Television (NL).

One of the most recent productions is the youth film Fight Girl (2018), directed by Johan Timmers, which premiered at the Netherlands Film Festival and won two Lions at the Amsterdam youth film festival Cinekid. Another recent production is The Test of Time, a feature length TV animation (AVROTROS), will premiere in the Netherlands on February 6th and will be broadcasted by AVROTROS at February 21st 2019. The film is directed by Joost van den Bosch and Erik Verkerk (Ka-ching Cartoons) and written by Mark Veerkamp and Tingue Dongelmans.

Currently in post-production

Projects that are currently in post-production are the feature length documentary Little man, Time and the Troubadour by director Ineke Smits, in co-production with IntiFilms (BE); Sunburned, a co-production with Niko Film (DE) and Staron Film (PL), directed and written by Carolina Helsgård. 

In pre-production

Feature projects that are in pre-production include the international co-production Sleep. by Jan-Willem van Ewijk (co-production with Belgium and USA); My Father is a Saucisse, by director Anouk Fortunier and scriptwriter Jean-Claude van Rijckeghem, a co-production with A Private View (BE); and La Practica, a co-production by Argentinian scriptwriter and director Martín Rejtman.

In development

Currently in development are the projects Mr. K, a feature film by Tallulah Schwab; Yandi and the Treasure of Mamata, a feature length animation by Joost van den Bosch and Erik Verkerk (Ka-Ching Cartoons); Injury, a feature film by writer and director Karin Junger; How I learned to Fly, a co-production with Serbia, Croatia and Germany written by Ljubica Lukovic and to to be directed by Radivoje Andrić; The Age of Magic, a co-production with IntiFilms (BE) written by Ben Okri and Peter Krüger (who will also be the director); and Raja by director and scriptwriter Deepak Rauniyar, in co-production with Nepal.
